Due parole con Yann Tiersen

Il giovane musicista bresciano Francesco Berta ha incontrato il celebre compositore francese Yann Tiersen, poliedrico uomo di musica che si destreggia abilmente tra generi e stili diversi, tra cui anche la musica per film. Il suo nome infatti è indelebilmente associato alla colonna sonora del film Il favoloso mondo di Amèlie (1999) di Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

In questa breve conversazione esclusiva, Tiersen parla dei suoi ultimi lavori extra-cinematografici e del suo essere compositore e musicista a tutto campo.

Francesco Berta: Ciao Yann! Ci potresti parlare dei tuoi nuovi lavori Skyline e Dust Lane e delle differenze fra i tuoi lavori precedenti?

Yann Tiersen: Ciao a te! Non c’è una grandissima differenza, eccetto forse per l’evoluzione della strumentazione, in crescita rispetto ai primi lavori. Ma il mio approccio alla composizione è sempre lo stesso.

FB: Da pianista ho apprezzato moltissimo l’utilizzo del pianoforte nei tuoi lavori precedenti. Sembra però che il tuo stile sia cambiato verso qualcosa di ancora più minimale.

YT: Non direi, sai? Ho solamente cominciato ad apprezzare di più strumenti monofonici  partendo da sovrapposizioni di parti più semplici.

FB: Quindi quando ti approcci ad una traccia, cominci da piccoli frammenti…

YT: Si, per la maggior parte chitarre, o effetti sonori, o anche semplicmente rumori ambientali.

FB: Ci parli della tua strumentazione sul palco? È vera la leggenda che non usi computer sul palco?

YT: (Ride) Assolutamente, abbiamo una piccola sequenza sonora, nulla di più.

FB: Ci dici qualcosa sul tuo progetto parallelo Elektronische Staubband? Come sono andate le date in Italia?

YT: Assolutamente. Abbiamo cominciato questo progetto con Lionel (Lionel Laquerrière n.d.r.) e rilasceremo un album per la fine del prossimo anno.

FB: Pensavo fosse un progetto relativo ad un paio di date solamente.

YT: No, siamo stati ad Ancona e Bologna in Italia, e anche in un piccolo festival in Francia. All’inizio suonavamo Dust Lane e Skyline solo con sintetizzatori e drum machine, ma ora che abbiamo creato una band, le cose stanno cambiando.

FB: Pezzi nuovi?

YT: Si, registreremo un album alla fine di questo tour.

FB: Ci dici qualcosa sul tuo studio? Ho letto un intervista su Les Retrouvailles, nel 2005 nel tuo studio c’era un Mac e Logic come sequencer. È cambiato qualcosa?

YT: Non è cambiato nulla, lavoro sempre nello stesso modo, registro a casa.

FB: E con i tuoi musicisti come funziona? Registri e poi mandi a loro le parti oppure scrivono con te?

YT: Oh no, no, la band viene alla fine, gli album sono scritti da me solamente.

FB: Un’anticipazione sull’uscita del tuo nuovo album?

YT: Sicuramente per l’anno prossimo, si parlerà del 2014.

Francesco Berta: Can we talk about your new release Skyline and the previous Dust Lane and the differences between your early works?

Yann Tiersen: There’s not so much difference, except the instrumentation, that is in progress since the beginning. But I always use the same small patterns of sounds.

FB: I loved your piano parts from your previous works. It seems that somehow your style has changed towards something more minimal…

YT: I don’t know If it’s minimal, I’m just not too comfortable with piano, it’s a pretty complex instrument. I start with small parts and lot of layers.

FB: So you start creating a track on small ideas…

YT: Yeah, most time guitars, or something else, like sound effects, noises.

FB: Can you talk about your stage setup? You don’t use computers, right?

YT: Oh no, never, tonight we have a little sound sequence, no more.

FB: Can you tell us about your side project Elektronische Staubband and the small tour in Italy?

YT: Of course. Last year we started a band with Lionel (Lionel Laquerrière n.d.r.) and we’ll release an album when we finish this tour.

FB: I thought you were only playing for one or two gigs…

YT: No, we did Ancona and Bologna in Italy, a small festival in France. We used to play Dust Lane and Skyline just with synths, but now we started a band, and things are evolving.

FB: New tracks…

YT: Yeah. As I said, we’ll record an album after we finish this tour.

FB: Can you talk us about your studio equipment? I heard an interview of you about Les Retrouvailles, in 2005 you used a Mac and Logic. Something changed?

YT: Nothing, I always work in the same way, I record at home, I always record there.

FB: But you record the track and give the parts to the musicians or they follow you in the studio?

YT: Oh no, no, the band is the final process, I mostly work alone.

FB: An anticipation about the release of the new album?

YT: Next year, 2014.
